Question: Are the creatinine levels in a healthy 30 year old woman much different from a 6 year old girl?

I just wanted to know if there was a big difference in the levels. What the level of a healthy woman, and the level of a healthy child?

Dr. Joshua Rassen responds:

Creatine is used by the body for muscle contraction. Actually it is not measured as a routine laboratory test to my knowledge. (You can get measurements of creatine kinase or creatine phosphokinase, which are actually something different from creatine.)

Actually I wonder if you are asking about creatinine. Creatinine is produced when creatine is broken down. Creatinine is measured quite often as it is a very useful test to check how the kidneys are working.

In a healthy person, the creatinine level depends on the amount of muscle that a person has. So the level of a 30 year old woman should be higher than a 6-year old girl. Here is a table of normal values:

· Adult female: 0.5-1.1 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL)

· Adult male: 0.6-1.2 mg/dL

· Adolescent: 0.5-1.0 mg/dL

· Child: 0.3-0.7 mg/dL

· Infant: 0.2-0.4 mg/dL

· Newborn: 0.3-1.2 mg/dL.

You can see that normal values are actually a range. The normal values for a child are 0.3 to 0.7 while an adult woman is generally between 0.5 and 1.1.

I hope this information is what you are seeking. Thank you for your question.
